The Old Farm - A Memoir

What follows is my mother's recollection of her summer days at The Old Farm, her family's first summer home near Blairstown, New Jersey. Although her family sold the property when she was nine years old, she fondly recalled those days until the end of her life at age 84. 

She presented her story on 31 handwritten pages, which my uncle recently shared with me. I am guessing that she wrote this sometime in the early to mid-1990s, as she mentions it had been 50 years since she summered at the Old Farm. I feel fortunate that she left these memories, and I enjoyed preserving her story. 

I added the headings. They were not part of the original story.

The World Needs More People Like Anthony

I will always remember my father's positive outlook on life and his generous nature. He was one who believed in the power of an upbeat attitude and was fond of saying "as long as the sun is shining you have nothing to complain about."

Anthony's tips for living a good, long life; 1) mind your own business; 2) smile; and 3) keep your fingers crossed.

 

I will take his positive attitude with me in all I do. He will be missed.

Reflections on a "Special" Place

We've all heard people talk about a "special place." One may call their grandmother's house, their beloved elementary school, a favorite summer camp, or any number of memorable locations a special place. Non-profit organizations remind supporters that their gift will help protect "this special place." As I think about special places in my life, I hope I can be more descriptive when I talk about and write about them. Yes, they are "special" but they are much more than that.
