Beehive Basin Snow Measuring Stick

Since 2014, I have posted updates on snowpack levels at local ski areas. The readings are usually  taken as the Steenburgh Winter comes to an end. Data comes from each ski resort's snow report and once recorded in these pages, the posts become a good reference point for comparing snow levels each year. (Click here to see reports for each year.)

In addition to what is reported in the snow reports, I have a series of photos that also report on the snowpack. Over the years, I have found the wilderness boundary sign in Beehive Basin to be a great measuring stick. The photos include a snow-free photo for comparison. I will continue to add photos as I get them.

The wildnerness boundary sign in Beehive is a great place to measure the snowpack.

To put these photos into perspective, I have added comments about what we were saying about the snowpack for certain years...

Comments from winter 2025 - 2026 - While the weather was bleak and the snowpack shallow in many spots throughout the winter, this photo looks pretty good.

Comments from 12.16.2021 - Mike explored Beehive for the first time this year and has the updated photo below. A storm earlier this week has given skiers hope. Bridger Bowl will be able to open on December 21 and it looks is if the snow many be here to stay for the winter.

Comments from 11.20.2018 - Social media is alive with people raving about the great early seasons snow conditions in Southwest Montana. Several are saying conditions are currently as good as they normally are in mid-January. Are we really that lucky or is it just early season stoke that prompt these comments? If you want to get an idea of how much snow has accumulated, take a look at snowpack levels as I've found them in Beehive Basin over the years. The photos don't lie. Scroll to the bottom of the screen to see the difference in snowpack between March 5, 2016 and November 12, 2018.
